This Homemade Blue Cheese Dressing is rich, creamy, and full of delicious earthy flavor. This thick and chunky dressing is perfect for more than just salads.

Blue Cheese Dressing on a spoon

This Homemade Blue Cheese Dressing is so easy to make and tastes amazing. Thick and creamy with chunks of blue cheese crumbles, it's richly flavored. The sour cream and vinegar add just the right amount of tanginess to the dressing. What makes this recipe so easy is that you probably already have most of the ingredients in your kitchen.

Blue cheese dressing isn't just for salads. This creamy dressing can act as a dip for pizza and wings. Or you can spread it on a sandwich for moisture and flavor. It's also perfect for adding to a vegetable crudite platter of celery, carrots, cucumbers, and broccoli florets. You can really do so much with this simple blue cheese dressing recipe. Let's talk about what you'll need for it.

    Video Tutorial

    Main Ingredients

    • Mayo. Full fat will give the richest flavor.
    • Sour Cream. Again, full-fat is best as it has the best texture.
    • Half & Half. Or you can use buttermilk.
    • Blue Cheese Crumbles.
    • Apple Cider Vinegar. Or lemon juice can be used instead.
    • Salt & Pepper.

How to make Blue Cheese Dressing

    1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the mayo, half and half, sour cream, ½ cup blue cheese, apple cider vinegar, salt, and black pepper until smooth.

adding necessary ingredients to a bowl

    2. Stir in the remaining ½ cup of blue cheese crumbles and enjoy!

    Helpful Tips & Tricks

    • Choose good quality blue cheese crumbles. The cheese should be white or cream with blueish-green veins throughout. Avoid any with green, pink, or brown in it.
    • Add more blue cheese crumbles. If you want your dressing extra thick, then add some extra crumbles. As they break into smaller pieces and blend in, the dressing will thicken.
    • Serve chilled. This homemade blue cheese dressing tastes best when served cold, so store it in the fridge before using. This will also keep it thick.
    • Whisk before using. Mayonnaise and sour cream will separate from the dressing as they sit, so make sure to give this dressing a little whisk before serving.

    Variations to this Recipe

    • Substitute a different acid. You can make this blue cheese dressing with apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, white vinegar, or red wine vinegar.
    • Add Worcestershire sauce. This sauce has a lot of salty, umami flavor that will match well with the pungent and tangy blue cheese.
    • Substitute another milk. We use Half and Half for this recipe, but you can also use buttermilk for extra tang, or heavy cream for more thickness.
    • Add walnuts. Toasted and chopped walnuts can add a little crunch to the dressing and some nutty flavor.

How to Store and Reheat it

You can store this Homemade Blue Cheese Dressing in the refrigerator for up to a week in a lidded jar or airtight container.
