  • 1 lb. asparagus, ends trimmed
  • ¼ cup clean water
  • ½ tsp. salt or to taste
  • 1 tbsp. butter (plant based or regular)
  • ½ tsp. garlic powder or to taste

  • To a large, non-stick skillet, add water and salt and stir a bit. Place the asparagus on top and cover the pan with a lid. Cook over medium heat until the water has completely evaporated.
  • Once the water is gone, turn off the heat and add the butter. Cover with the lid again and wait for 1 minute, allowing the butter to melt.
  • Finally, sprinkle the garlic powder on top, and gently move the asparagus around to spread the garlic powder evenly over the stalks. Serve.

Tips for the best Stovetop Asparagus

  • Choose good quality asparagus. Use asparagus stalks that are firm and plump. Their color should not appear faded. For the tips, look for ones that are tightly closed.
  • Trim the ends of the asparagus. The ends of the stalks are usually tough and fibrous, so trim them off before placing them in the pan to cook.
  • Salt the water. By adding the salt to the water, the asparagus stalks will become infused with the flavor as the water steams away. Adding salt later in the cooking process would result in less flavor.
  • Cover the pan. This is a must for this recipe to work. The lid traps the heat and water to create a steaming effect, which softens and cooks the stalks until they're tender. It also helps the butter melt.

How to Store and Reheat it

You can store any leftover Stovetop Asparagus in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It should last for about 3-5 days. To reheat it, just warm it for a few minutes in the microwave or place it back on the stove.
