What is an Iced Caramel Macchiato?
Iced Caramel Macchiato is one of the most popular espresso-based Starbucks drinks. It is usually the #1 Best Seller during the summer months. It is made with vanilla syrup (for a touch of sweetness), ice, milk, espresso, and creamy caramel sauce, that is drizzled on the top.
Vanilla Syrup
You can purchase vanilla syrup in a large supermarket, or on Amazon. They even sell Starbucks Vanilla Syrup on Amazon, so that would be your best option to achieve a very authentic Starbucks taste. However, I don't recommend buying the whole bottle if you are not planning on making Iced or Hot Caramel Macchiatos regularly. If you are just making it once, use homemade simple syrup instead, or, I also like using a little agave syrup (Yum!).
Milk
At Starbucks, we usually use 2% reduced-fat milk, but you may choose to use whole milk, non-fat milk, or vanilla soy milk. If you use vanilla soy milk, you may skip the vanilla syrup altogether.
Espresso
I always recommend using a macchinetta to prepare THE BEST TASTING espresso. It is a very convenient and cheap option that guarantees great results. You can shop around and find a macchinetta for as low as $7, but I am secretly dreaming about this beauty: Bialetti Moka Express 3-Cup Stovetop Espresso Maker. Here is a useful video demonstrating how to make espresso using macchinetta:

Caramel Sauce
While it is possible to find Starbucks caramel sauce on eBay and sometimes in-stores, I found that this Ghirardelli Caramel Sauce is really wonderful, so I always purchase this kind.

Hi
Love your Blog. When making an Expresso for Caramel Macchiato what coffee grounds does Starbucks use. Thank you
Tania Sheff says
Hi LeeAnn! Thank you! They use Starbucks Espresso Roast.

I make this at home all the time. I make my own homemade vanilla syrup, too because Torani syrups are ridiculously expensive for something so easy and cheap to make at home (it's just equal parts water and sugar, and about a tablespoon of pure vanilla extract per 1 1/4 cups water). Stir in pan until dissolved, remove from heat just before mixture boils. Refrigerate (I use an empty Torani vanilla syrup bottle).
With the iced caramel macchiato, I make it the same way except I also put the caramel syrup on the bottom and also decorate the inner sides of the glass with caramel syrup before adding the milk 🙂

Hi! Do you also have to use espresso or can we brew coffee from a Keurig? I know nothing about coffee!
Tania Sheff says
Hi Colby! If your Keurig makes espresso, you can use that. You cannot use regular coffee in this recipe.
Colby says
If you add hot coffee to this recipe then won’t all the Ice melt and then not taste the same?
Tania Sheff says
Hi Colby! You'll put the hot coffee over cold milk and ice> It won't melt it fully, just a bit. That's what we do at Starbucks as well. Let me know if you try it!
