This Simple Portobello Mushroom Burger is SO FLAVORFUL and TASTY! Grill it or cook it on the stovetop.

These Mushroom Burgers are so meaty and filling that even meat lovers will enjoy them. The Portobello mushrooms are marinated in a garlic-balsamic marinade, and they just soak up the flavors. These would taste best when cooked on the grill (like any food, right?), but it is also possible to cook these mushroom burgers on the stovetop.
By the way, Portobello mushrooms (or other edible mushrooms) are good for you. They are low in fat, high in fiber, and contain B vitamins, selenium, and potassium.

How to Select and Store Portobello Mushrooms
When buying Portobello mushrooms, look for smooth, firm caps without wet slimy patches. Store them in the refrigerator, inside a loosely closed bag or wrap them in a damp cloth.
Should you Remove Gills from Portobello Mushrooms
A lot of you wonder why I removed the gills from portobellos. While the gills are edible, I choose to remove them, because they add a bit of muddy flavor. However, it is perfectly ok to leave them, if you prefer. Here is a video from America's Test Kitchen you might find interesting: How to Properly Prepare Portobello Mushrooms
How to Make Portobello Mushroom Burger:
1. Mix all of the marinade ingredients together. Cover the mushrooms with marinade on both sides. (For best results, marinate the mushrooms for at least 2 hours.)
2. IF USING AN OUTDOOR GRILL: Brush grate with oil. Grill the mushrooms for 5-7 minutes on each side. Use the leftover marinade for basting.
3. IF USING A STOVETOP: Cook mushrooms in a frying pan covered with a tight lid, on medium-low heat, for about 4-5 minutes on each side. Cooking time may vary depending on the size of the mushroom. If your mushrooms are small, they will need 3 minutes on each side.
4. While the mushrooms are cooking, toast the buns. You may choose to skip this step.
5. Spread 1 tsp. of mustard on each bun.
6. Once the mushrooms are cooked, lift the lid, place the cheese on top, and return the lid, allowing the cheese to melt.
7. Transfer the mushrooms to the buns, top with fried onions and assemble the burger.
