Main Ingredients
- Coleslaw Mix. You can just use a simple mix of cabbage and carrots. Make it yourself, or use a store bought coleslaw mix to save time.
- Bell Pepper. Any color could be used for this slaw, but I used orange.
- Herbs. Fresh scallions and cilantro.
- The dressing ingredients. This homemade Asian dressing is made of rice vinegar, grapeseed oil (or any other neutral tasting oil), sesame oil, peanut butter, soy sauce, garlic, ginger, and maple syrup.
- Peanuts and/or sesame seeds. To garnish.
How to Make Asian Slaw
1. Place the coleslaw mix, sliced bell pepper, chopped scallions, and cilantro into a mixing bowl.
2. Prepare the dressing by mixing all of the dressing ingredients together in a small mason jar. Shake to combine.
3. Pour the dressing over the salad and mix well.
4. Transfer the Asian slaw into a serving bowl, and then garnish with sesame seeds and peanuts. Serve.
Add-ins & Substitutes for this Slaw
- Substitute garnishes. If you'd like to try different garnishes, you could also use wonton strips, different nuts (like almonds or walnuts), or add fruit (such as diced apples or cranberries).
- Create your own dressing. This Asian dressing complements the flavors of this slaw, but if you have your own favorite, then add that. Whether it's store bought or something you make yourself, you can try different dressings on this slaw.
- Add some protein. Instead of serving this as a side, you can make this a full-on meal by adding some protein-packed tofu, chicken, steamed fish, or edamame. This will make it more satisfying and a great light lunch or dinner.
How to Store this Simple Asian Slaw
If you haven't yet added the homemade dressing to this slaw salad, then you can store the dry ingredients in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-5 days. If you have already dressed your Asian Slaw, then it will begin to absorb the dressing and lose some of its delicious crispness after a day or so. Try to only make as much as you plan to eat for best quality.
What to Serve it with
- As is. It tastes great all on its own, so dig in!
