Onion Fritters - A simple recipe with a tasty crunch that is loaded with fun flavors and an amazing taste.

Onion Fritters on a plate

I love the spin on this recipe. The flavor will remind you of onion rings but with much more flavor and taste. The shredded carrots create a beautiful coloring that makes them perfect for an appetizer dish to share with family and friends.

No matter if you're making this simple onion recipe to enjoy at home alone or as a way to share your love of cooking with others, there's no doubt that this is going to be a hit.

Be certain to savor every bite and to choose a delicious dip of your choice to help enhance the wonderful flavors as well.

Main Ingredients

  • Onions. Use yellow or white onions.
  • Carrot. Adds extra sweetness and color.
  • Garlic. For extra aroma.
  • Eggs. Hold the fritters together.
  • Flour. Use all-purpose flour.
  • Parmesan Cheese. This ingredient is optional.
  • Parsley. Or fresh dill.
  • Paprika.
  • Salt and Pepper. To taste.
  • Oil for frying. I use grapeseed oil.

How to make Onion Fritters

1. In a large bowl mix together all of the ingredients besides the oil.

mixing the batter for the fritters

2. Place a cast iron or non-stick pan over medium heat until hot. Add the oil and swirl to coat the pan (a non-stick pan needs less oil). Scoop out 2- to 3-tablespoon mounds of the onion mixture into the pan, flattening the mounds slightly with a spoon and spacing them about one inch apart.

3. Cook the fritters for 2 to 3 minutes, flip them once, and cook them for an additional 1 to 2 minutes until they’re golden brown and cooked through. (*See recipe note below for baking instructions).

4. Serve warm with yogurt or sour cream or my Beet Aioli (recipe in the notes section).

RECIPE NOTE: If you wish to bake these onion fritters instead, follow step 1 to make the onion mixture. Once you have arranged the fritters on the hot, slightly oiled oven-safe skillet, place them in the preheated to 425⁰F oven, and bake for 10-13 minutes.

How to make my Beet Aioli

This beet aioli is not only pretty but it makes a perfect dip for the onion fritters. You'll need to mix together ½ cup of mayo, 3 tablespoons of cooked finely grated beet, and 1 minced garlic clove. Ready!

Some other diping sauce ideas include:

  • Tzatziki (Low Fat Yogurt & Cucumber Dip)
  • Copycat Outback Bloom Sauce
  • Cilantro Jalapeno Sauce
  • Yogurt
  • Sour Cream

Tips and Tricks

Pay attention to the temperature of the oil. You're not going to want the oil to be too hot or it's going to burn the onion fritters and give them a bitter taste. Follow the heating directions on the recipe above to ensure that you're frying them up at the proper temperature.

Cut the onions into similar sizes. Be certain that you have the onion about the same size when you cut them up. That way, there aren't any big chunks and they cook evenly.

Lay out a paper towel on a plate to soak up excess oil. Since you're not going to be using a ton of oil, this might not be a huge concern but just in case, lay the cooked onion fritters on a paper towel once you pull them from the cast-iron skillet to help soak up some of the excess cooking oil.

How to store and reheat

Storing these Onion Fritters is super simple as well. They'll need to be kept in the fridge in a container with a lid until you're ready to reheat and eat. They'll stay fresh for up to 3 days.

Once you're ready to enjoy it again, there are a few ways that you can easily do so. The first is to reheat them low and slow on the stovetop, using a small amount of oil to fry them up just until they're hot again. (You'll need to stay close and pay attention because you don't want to burn them!)

The other way to reheat is to pop them in the microwave for a few seconds of time.

What to serve with these fritters

As I mentioned above, the dipping sauce is the key but there are a few other food items that you can serve with these homemade fritters.

A nice side salad is always a good choice such as Refreshing Cucumber Salad or Amazing Kale Salad.

If you're craving for a new, exciting onion recipe, you're really going to love these delicious Onion Fritters! There's really no other flavor out there quite like them!

I made these tonight and they were delish. I added a bit more paprika and garlic. I don't like beets (although the ailoi is pretty) I mixed some Greek yogurt, cilantro, mayo and garlic together for my sauce.
